A short story by Chris Johnson

Each year, on her parents’ anniversary, Louise’s mother would spray a single mist of an old cologne bottle. A ritual. A memory. A whisper from the past.

Years later, when the scent returns on its own, Louise begins to understand what her mother always knew: some love lingers longer than breath. And some bottles never truly empty.

A gentle, supernatural short about memory, scent, and the ghosts we welcome.

Loved the title One Last Spray - and the story!

I really enjoyed this story. It was sweet and sad. Chris Johnson has an amazing gift for creating atmosphere that the reader can actually feel. His novels and short stories never disappoint. I recommend anything and everything written by this master storyteller.

Brought back memories. Thank you.

I’m 62, and One Last Spray hit me in a way I wasn’t expecting. It’s short, yes, but powerful. Like one of those memories that sneaks up on you when you’re digging through old boxes and suddenly catch a whiff of something that takes you straight back to your twenties.

Chris Johnson has written a story that’s deceptively simple on the surface: an old bottle of cologne still sitting there like a forgotten ghost.

I lost my brother in a car accident when I was 19. The way Chris Johnson captures those little details. The smells, the silences, the awkward attempts to put things right when it’s already too late.

There’s a line in the story about how scent can outlast memory, and it’s true. I still remember the cologne my brother used to wear. Haven’t smelled it in years, but reading this brought it right back.

This isn’t a flashy story. It’s honest. And I think that’s why it works so well. It’s for anyone who’s ever stood in a room alone and whispered an apology they know can’t be heard.

Highly recommend it if you’ve ever had a complicated goodbye or never got to say one at all.

Tender

This brought tears to my eyes. In a good way, that is.

Chris has a diverse style. One moment he’s thrilling you with action and cinematic adventure. Next, he slows the pace to something so utterly human like this.
